Jesus Said to Test Those Who Claim to Be Apostles

The gift of the apostle is being raised up—but so is the counterfeit.

Today, believers encounter extraordinary claims about ministry titles, revelations, miracles, and spiritual authority. Some accept these claims too quickly. Others react by rejecting apostolic ministry altogether. Neither response reflects mature biblical discernment.

In Revelation 2:2, Jesus commended the Ephesian church because it tested those who claimed to be apostles. Testing an apostolic claim is therefore not cynical or dishonoring. When performed prayerfully and righteously, it is an act of obedience.

We Examine Fruit, Not Hearts

First Corinthians 2:15 teaches that the spiritual person judges or examines all things. This does not authorize us to condemn people or presume to know their hearts. God judges people. Our responsibility is to compare observable words, actions, character, and fruit with His Word.

That process requires prayer, patience, mature counsel, and time.

A minister should not be accepted merely because of a title, large following, impressive manifestation, or accurate prophetic word. Scripture warns that signs can occur even when someone is leading people in the wrong direction. Gifts may attract attention, but character, motives, doctrine, relationships, and enduring fruit reveal much more.

Ten Areas Worth Examining

When someone claims apostolic authority, consider these questions:

1. Christ and the message: Do they love Jesus and direct attention toward Him? Does their teaching agree with Scripture?

2. Calling and confirmation: How were they called and sent? Is their assignment clear, and has it been recognized by proven leaders?

3. Character and motive: Do humility, teachability, holiness, and the fruit of the Spirit mark their life? Is there evidence of greed, manipulation, fame-seeking, or self-exaltation?

4. Fruit that remains: What has developed through their ministry over time? Are people equipped, leaders matured, churches strengthened, and new works established?

5. Signs and obedience: Do signs point people toward God’s Word and faithful obedience? Manifestations alone cannot prove an apostolic claim.

6. Spiritual strategy: Do they have wisdom to move revelation into practical action, establish sound foundations, and produce measurable results?

7. Teamwork and equipping: Do they work well with other leaders and help others fulfill their assignments—or is everything centered on their own platform?

8. Stewardship and accountability: Are people, finances, and authority handled responsibly? Is there credible accountability and transparency?

9. Endurance: What does their ministry history reveal? How do they respond to opposition, failure, delay, and hardship?

10. Courage and correction: Do they speak truth in love, pursue restoration, receive correction, and make things right when they are wrong?

No single test should be separated from the whole. We must look for a consistent biblical pattern—not a performance.

Immaturity or incomplete evidence does not automatically make someone false. Sometimes the wisest response is to wait, observe, verify, and seek counsel. However, persistent deceit, exploitation, corrupt fruit, idolatry, or rejection of correction requires protective boundaries.
